The shifting circumstances and variable functions of visual art and design within a global context with emphasis on a critical understanding of cultural and geographical boundaries and a reflexivity on key concepts used in the disciplinary study of art history; distinction of ‘art’ and ‘design,’ and ‘east’ and ‘west’; the emergence of visual art from particular contexts; the significance of cross cultural approaches to tradition and practice.
